Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

There are many conventions within a film trailer that make the film successful and have many audiences. Within my research I’ve learnt that every trailers that I have watched for inspiration and knowledge is that they all have a green screen at the beginning of the trailer which also tells you the age rating of the film where it makes the audience aware if the film is suited for them or not. With this I also added a green screen at the beginning of my teaser trailer. In addition, typically the first part of a film trailer has the production logo to which brings in the audience as if they previously watched a film from “Disney” and enjoyed it they would have the thought that the film will also be good to watch. I also added a production logo called “perfect motion” within my trailer and I designed it on adobe after effects will the help of YouTube to guide me.

Sound
Within my teaser trailer, I have added sound that is part of the conventions of any trailers. I have included both diegetic and non-diegetic sounds. As within my trailer I have risers which makes the audience anticipate and builds up tension.  Near the end of my teaser trailer I wanted to fright the audience this was done by having a diegetic sound. I adding a female screaming towards then end where it wasn’t suspected and this will make the audience jump.

Teaser poster

It has been found that successful film posters follow certain conventions in order to appeal to audiences, provide information, and display the genres and themes of the film, etc.
I had designed my teaser poster and ensured I was following the typical codes and conventions of a poster.
I made sure I had a large film title displayed in order for it to be eye catching towards the audience as in my research I had realised a lot of the posters had a large title placed.

Torodov equilibrium theory

Todorov in 1969 produced a theory which he believed to be able to be applied to any film. Todorov’s narrative theory mainly states that most stories or plot follow the same pattern or path. He believes there are 5 steps in this pattern which are;
1. Equilibrium (everything is as it should be)
2. Disruption (by an event)
3. Recognition of disruption
4. Attempts to repair disruption
5. Return to equilibrium

What have you learned from your audience feedback?
Audience feedback is really important in order to find out what the audience liked or disliked. The audience’s expectations are based upon the media product to show to them. Presenting my coursework to my peers has helped me a lot as they have giving me excellent feedback on what I've done and what I could improve on.
I was also complimented on the sound effects that I chose.

One person commented on how well the film trailer could be received by the audience. They said that it was easy and clear to understand. But, the vast majority of people stated that the plot should have had more to it by adding more footage to my film trailer. So if I were to remake it, I would try add more footage to my teaser film trailer to fully satisfy the audience although it was meant for the audience to not gain a lot of content of the story line in order for the audience to have the urge to want to watch it.

There was also positive feedback towards the idea of the story line of my teaser trailer as they said they feel mysterious and want to find out what the film is all about. Below are some of the feedback the audience gave me;

Magazine
“I really love the effect of the title especially as it goes behind the main image” Rebecca Shaw
“The colours of the film magazine I do really like as it not over the top, its colour coordinated however could add more to it.” Evin Bezginsoy
Poster
“Absolutely love the film title effect at the top of the page!” Howjen Altan
“The main image seems so perfect, it gives a mysterious look which I really do like” D’andre Steel
Trailer
“I think the sounds suit the film trailer very well” Leanne Hayes
“love the transitions of the fades and the different scenes however I think there should be more scenes in the film trailer” Sabrina Yasser

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

During the research and planning stages I used a number of different programmes and websites.

Blogger:
One of the media technologies I had used was Blogger as it is a free online platform in which we use to publish all of our coursework on to a digital/online presence. By doing so, it allows us to keep track of all of our research and planning. This is useful as I can easily edit any of the posts at any time but it also provides a much easier way for my teachers to view all of our work quickly and in one place. The ability for both teachers and peers to leave feedback on any of the posts is also helpful as it may shed some light on what I have to do in order to make each post to the highest standard possible. Overall, the use of the Blogger has allowed me to add a real structure to my research and planning but also allows me to present my work in a professional looking way.

YouTube:
YouTube is an online video based media sharing website; and was one of the main online products that I used in order to conduct my research and planning. Ultimately, I had received a lot of inspiration and help on watching teaser trailers on YouTube. We also used YouTube to upload our

final music video.

Camera
During filming my trailer and production of the ancillary and main tasked I was given a camera to use. As I don’t have a camera that is high quality, the academy was offering equipment’s. The camera that I used was a Canon 1200D that the media department gave the class to borrow. I was able to both record and take photos with the camera and it was very easy to get the hang off.
The media department allowed me to borrow a tripod, golden light screen and hand held monopod. I used these for my film magazine and the production of my trailer.
The equipment that I was given by the department helped me ensure that the camera achieves better framing of the scenes and images.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
When making my trailer, poster and film magazine cover I would try to link all three together as much as I could. The mixture of the trailer and my ancillary text is effective as my film poster gave away the main location of the film and gives ideas to what the trailer will be like. I wanted tp keep the same genre throughout and keep the style consistent. The theme I followed was a thriller atmosphere which I did follow
Within my teaser trailer I made sure the actress had the same outfit that she has on for the main film poster so this doesn’t cause any confusion.
I believe that due to the use of conveying conventions for each product and using a continuous genre and look, my media product and ancillary text is effective as it reaches out to my target audience and keeps them in suspense in wanting to go watch the film in cinema through my ancillary texts and this is very popular throughout thriller films in particular.

Decide (mention) what assignment you have chosen and specify the genre(s) of your chosen topic

For my assignment, I have chosen to promote a package for a film to a trailer together with a poster for the film and a film magazine front cover, featuring the film.
The genre of my film will be horror and the target audience that is associated with my genre would be teenagers to adults, so 15 and over.

The idea concept of my trailer assignment is ‘Unfriended’, ‘The Call’ and ‘Taken’ where a teenage girl has been kidnapped however, due to my trailer being a teaser I will not show much detail about the story line. The trailer will be shot from the perspective of the abducted teenager view meaning that the identity of the teenager will not be known.
